"Individual federations give their list of implements required along with the names of manufacturers which offer them to the organising committee," Mr Anand said. "The committee has to procure implements from the companies recommended by the several federations. Performance of an athlete depends a lot on the implements he uses. Many times implements are customised according to athletes' preferences," he said.

"The deadline to submit the proposals to the technical committee of the London Organising Cabinet of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog) is February end. A lot of proposals will be coming by the companies who would require to supply equipment. The proposals will be filtered to bring the numbers down to a favoured few," explained Imre Matrahazi , technical manager, IAAF, the Monaco-based organisation.
