Question: I bought an 8" Dob at a garage cut-price and the main mirror is rather dusty. I don't want to risk messing up the alignment but I unusually want to clean it up.

Answer: The austere rule for cleaning a mirror in a reflecting telescope is DONT. The coatings on the replication are very delicate and easy to damage. Dust isn't a big deal. If the reflection is absolutely filthy then you will probably have to clean it but only if it is extremely soiled.
